Szymon Kołecki

A barbell lifter living in Ciechanów, competitor of KPC Górnik Polkowice, silver medal winner at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 and the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 (this medal gave him much more satisfaction than the one won in Sydney), 4-time World Championships medalist, 6-time European Championships medalist (5-time European Champion). His very promising career was interrupted by a serious back injury. He returned to active weightlifting only at the end of 2005.
In 2006 he won the title of the European champion in this discipline, which was widely recognized as his great return to professional sport, and in 2008 in the category up to 94 kg he repeated this feat. On 6 October 2006, he won the title of vice-champion in the 94 kg category at the Senior World Weightlifting Championships held in Santo Domingo. On 29 April 2000 in Sofia he broke the world record in a toss-up with the result of 232.5 kg. He comes from Wierzbno near Wrocław.

Szymon's hobbies apart from weightlifting include fishing, soccer, boxing and reading books, mainly historical ones. On November 10, 2008 he won "The Great Test of History" organized by TVP on the occasion of 90th anniversary of regaining independence. He turned out to be better than many politicians, artists, sportsmen and journalists.
