His very promising career was interrupted by a serious back injury. He returned to active weightlifting only at the end of 2005.

On 6 October 2006, he won the title of vice-champion in the 94 kg category at the Senior World Weightlifting Championships held in Santo Domingo. On 29 April 2000 in Sofia he broke the world record in a toss-up with the result of 232.5 kg. He comes from Wierzbno near Wrocław.
Szymon's hobbies apart from weightlifting include fishing, soccer, boxing and reading books, mainly historical ones. On November 10, 2008 he won "The Great Test of History" organized by TVP on the occasion of 90th anniversary of regaining independence. He turned out to be better than many politicians, artists, sportsmen and journalists.
